Reading 101
Guided Practice in Reading

Enrollment

Reading 101 is required for students taking Reading 100. Both are a prerequisite for English 1A. Reading 101 involves reading, analyzing, and discussing newspaper articles and editorials and applying a reading strategy called Steps in Reading.

Objective

At the conclusion of the course, students will be able to read expository essays and respond to questions and/or write summaries that demonstrate comprehension of (1) the thesis/main idea; and (2) the ideas/facts supporting the thesis.

Required Material

A lab manual titled Reading 101 that can be purchased at the De Anza College Bookstore for about a dollar.

Assignments and Drop Policy

This class operates in real time. Each week of the 12 week quarter a new assignment will appear at the website. Students are expected to complete and submit electronically each week's assignment before the Sunday of the next week. You will have only one week to complete that week's assignment. Late assignments will not be accepted. If, at any time throughout the quarter, a student does not submit two weekly assignments, he/she is automatically dropped from the class.

Grades

Assignments will be evaluated based on completeness and correctness. Students must complete the assigned work acceptably in order to receive credit. No points will be given for incorrect assignments. Partial credit may be given for incomplete assignments.
Reading 101 is a Pass/No Pass course. To pass the course, students must accumulate 70 of the 104 total possible points.

Examinations

Important weekly assignments occur 4 times during the 12 week quarter. For the midterm and the final exams, you will have to come to the Testing Center on the De Anza campus and take the midterm and final exams there.
  • Week 6 assignment is worth 15 points.
  • Week 7, the midterm, is worth 25 points.
  • Week 9 assignment is worth 15 points.
  • Week 12, the final, is worth 15 points.
It is critical that you complete and submit all assignments. After the week is over, you will have no second chance to submit any assignment.
