Week 4 Assignment

Step 5 Summary Writing

You've Got Mail, But it's Mostly Junk

Step 5 Writing a Summary

A summary is a condensed version of a longer text. Frequently you may be asked to read a text, document, or manual, and write a condensed version of it. Summary writing is an valuable skill, both for academic work and the workplace.
Writing an effective summary requires that you:
  • Include the topic
  • State the thesis clearly and accurately
  • Include 4-5 supporting points that are clear examples of, or evidence for, your thesis
  • Paraphrase the supporting points, or use "quotes" if using the author's exact words, and explain the quotes
  • Express the author's point of view and not your own
  • Include support for both the problem and the solution
When writing your summary:
  • Start with the Readiness Lab Format
  • Show how your supporting points confirm the thesis
  • Do not insert your own opinions or thoughts
  • Cite the author as the source of the supporting points
  • Write your summary in paragraph form
  • Proofread for spelling and grammar errors
  • To help the reader, number your supporting points
